10 Music Prompts to Kickstart Your Weekend Writing (Edition III)
Kickstart your writing with one (or all) of the ten music prompts shared in today’s post. Then share what you write in a comment or subscriber chat thread so we can chat about it. Have fun!
Below are ten music prompts you can use to kickstart your writing. Use one (or all) of them to kickstart your writing. Just write whatever comes to mind when you first read one of the song lyrics listed below, or listen to the song it’s from. Whether it sparks a scene with characters in it, a poem, a short story, a comic strip, a memory, a dialogue, a dream, a feeling, etc., try not to overthink it and just go with it.
“Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It’s based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer”
- Paperback Writer by The Beatles
“He said, ‘There ain’t no rest for the wicked
Money don’t grow on trees
I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed
There ain’t nothing in this world for free
I know I can’t slow down, I can’t hold back
Though you know, I wish I could
Oh no, there ain’t no rest for the wicked
Until we close our eyes for good’”
-Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephant
“My mama told me when I was young
‘We are all born superstars’
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir
‘There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are’
She said, ‘Cause He made you perfect, babe’
So hold your head up, girl, and you’ll go far”
-Born this Way by Lady Gaga
“To the open arms of the sea, yeah
Lonely rivers sigh
“Wait for me, wait for me”
I’ll be coming home, wait for me”
-Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers
“I bet there’s rich folks eatin’ in a fancy dining car
They’re probably drinkin’ coffee and smoking big cigars
Well, I know I had it coming, I know I can’t be free
But those people keep a-movin’, and that’s what tortures me”
-Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash
“Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose
Nothin’, don’t mean nothin’, honey, if it ain’t free”
-Me and Bobby McGhee by Janis Joplin
“I don’t have digital
I don’t have diddly-squat
It’s not having what you want
It’s wanting what you’ve got”
- Soak up the Sun by Sheryl Crow
“’Cause I make it so easy to fall in love
So come, give me a call, and we’ll fall into us
I’m the perfect mix of Saturday night and the rest of your life
Anyone with a heart would agree
It’s so easy to fall in love with”
-So Easy to Fall in Love by Olivia Dean
“I’m so happy ‘cause today I found my friends
They’re in my head
I’m so ugly, that’s okay, ‘cause so are you
Broke our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday, for all I care
And I’m not scared
Light my candles in a daze
‘Cause I’ve found God”
- Lithium by Nirvana
“’Cause I’m too messy, and then I’m too fucking clean
You told me, ‘Get a job,’ then you ask where the hell I’ve been
And I’m too perfect ‘til I open my big mouth
I want to be me, is that not allowed?
And I’m too clever, and then I’m too fucking dumb
You hate it when I cry, unless it’s that time of the month
And I’m too perfect ‘til I show you that I’m not
A thousand people I could be for you, and you hate the fucking lot”
-Messy by Lola Young
