I'll finally admit it: I am not a fan of summertime. Especially when it comes to writing.
It’s always harder for me to write during the summer because it’s louder and hotter, everywhere, all the time. Everyone and everything just seem more intense during the summer too, and not in a good way, but in an anxious, reactive, volatile sort of way. And it always seems like someone’s mowing or drilling something, or playing loud music, or yelling at their kids, right outside my office window.
No matter how early I get up, it’s always light and hot outside, and there’s always people around. It just seems so much harder to escape the noise and heat and get good, long stretches of writing done during the summer. I always seem to make it work somehow and keep writing, of course. But my writing sessions tend to be interrupted or delayed more frequently during the summer, which makes me more anxious and exhausted.
Do any other writers out there experience this too?
Are there any other writers out there who are as eager as I am for the autumn and winter months?
Personally, I do my best writing when it’s dark and cool outside, and everyone else is asleep. I used to stay up later to get my best writing done, but now I wake up earlier instead because I don’t really have a choice. Yet during the summer, this is harder to do because the sun keeps rising earlier and earlier and earlier. So, I’m happy autumn has finally arrived, with its cooler, shorter days.
I don’t like the longer summer days because they’re unnecessarily exhausting, as everyone’s always trying to fill them up with more and more tasks to do and events to attend, which also makes it more challenging to get in good stretches of writing time.
My ideal seasons to write are autumn and winter, when there are more hours of darkness and it isn't as noisy and hot outside, when the world is much calmer. It’s also nice to be able to have a cup of something warm nearby while I write.
When the world is calmer, as it typically is during autumn and winter, my thoughts are clearer and unimpeded, and it’s easier to concentrate and maintain a steady, complex train of thought as I write. Sure, I can get words onto the page when there’s a bunch of noise and busyness going on around me during the summer months, but they’ll probably need to be revised and edited more times.
Is there anyone else who prefers writing during the autumn and winter months? If not, why? I am curious to learn a different point of view.
