Book Review: Sleep Tight
Here’s my book review for Sleep Tight by J.H. Markert. Don’t forget to leave a comment if you’ve read it too. And check out today’s writing prompt at the bottom of this post.
Sleep Tight by J.H. Markert is a good read, but is more of a suspenseful mystery than a thriller or horror novel. If you are looking to read a gorey horror novel, this one may not be for you. If you enjoy more psychological thrillers, however, you will likely enjoy this one.
I found that the first half of this novel was a bit slower-paced and could be repetitive at times, but I kept reading it due to the multifaceted mystery that was being presented and slowly untangled. And I wasn’t disappointed on that front, as in the middle of the novel there were many twists and turns presented that kept me turning pages.
There were also plenty of creepy scenes full of people wearing animal masks, and interviews inside an asylum for the criminally insane, that will definitely put you on edge.
Again, I kept reading to unravel the mysteries that were presented throughout the novel. However, by the time I reached the end of the novel, I didn’t feel like much of what was presented was tied together in concrete ways. As a reader, I felt that I was left to strongly infer a lot of things, but not that much was clearly tied together— like who exactly the Lost Children were and why they were Satanic or chose to follow Diane, or the entirety of Noah’s involvement in everything, etc. Perhaps a sequel would clear up a few things, as the end of the novel does imply that one is possible?
Overall, I thought this was a decent read, but after reading it, I felt as if there were too many moving pieces that didn’t add up or make a lot of sense in the end. Although, that might have been the point?
I would ultimately recommend this book to readers who want to enjoy a quick read with a lot of twists and turns, who also appreciate an open-ended ending to a book.
