Coming Soon: Incognito, a Modern-Day Serial Publication
Attention: I am starting a new serial publication on Substack. Read more details about it below. I hope you’re as eager to read it as I am to write it! (Also, be sure to see today’s writing prompt.)
Some of you may already know that I have been working on a debut novel for the past several years, as I have shared excerpts from various drafts of that novel in this publication, Daily Drafts & Dialogues. What you may not know, however, is that I have written well over 300,000+ words and over nine drafts of that debut novel as of this writing— a debut novel that will never come to fruition quite how I had imagined it would when I first started writing it. But these things happen when you’re a writer and ultimately, I’m okay with how everything has transpired because it has led me to something I’m even more excited to work on instead: a serial publication, here on Substack.
Over the past month, I have been writing the first installments of a serial publication that will likely be titled Incognito. I hope to have a blurb for this publication to share with you soon, so you will know all about what it will be about and what to expect. For now, I can tell you that it follows a female protagonist who is caught between the world of billionaires and the ‘real world’ in which everyone else lives, that it will highlight some of the major headlines and plights of our time, and that you can expect some mystery, intrigue, betrayal, hope, friendship, family drama, high-stakes decisions and their consequences, some literary flair, and a little bit of romance, among other things. Please also note that I will be using a lot of the material I have been working on for the debut novel I mentioned above in this serial publication too, so I won’t necessarily be starting completely from scratch. Whew!
The current plan is to publish a new chapter installment (a new post) on Substack for this serial publication every seven to ten days once it is up and running. I will be sure to share a link to this new Substack publication as soon as I can, which I am currently ninety-percent certain will be called Incognito: A Modern-Day Serial. And I hope to have the first chapter of this serial up sometime in September, as I am eager to share it with you all. And who knows? After a year or so of sharing these serial posts, I might see if it works to revise and or edit them into something that resembles the form of a novel??? We shall see!
Additionally, I am currently planning to share bonus content to supplement this serial publication, content that will likely include things like character sketches and background information, original drafts, additional scenes, additional articles and photos, fun polls, etc. I am also planning to have an active Chat Thread for this serial publication so readers can really immerse themselves in it and hopefully find an engaging community there.
Why a serial publication? Well, for starters, serial publications have been leveraged by many well-known authors in the past to write about things going on in the real world as they were writing those publications. Authors like Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas, Mark Twain, George Eliot, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Upton Sinclair, and more, have leveraged serial publications in the past to write about some of the most important topics and events of their time as those things were actually happening and relevant to them. And they managed to do so in compelling and engaging ways via thought-provoking and entertaining fiction, while growing and engaging wider readerships.
Also, yes, I can be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes, which proved challenging when working on a debut novel. But, in all fairness, I have also been trying to write something for several years that speaks directly to and about the current times we're living in and the people living in them. And, as you can imagine, writing about our current world via fiction in the form of a longer-form novel that takes months and or years to develop has become quite the monumental task, as everything is constantly and drastically changing, sometimes overnight. So, I finally figured, why not start sharing what I am writing about sooner rather than later? And make it entertain, as well as form a community around it while I’m at it?
I can’t wait to share more details about this new serial publication with you as they become available. Subscribe for free if you haven’t already and stay tuned! And, as always, thank you so much for reading and engaging with my posts. Your support means the world to me!
