Free Write: Autumn
Today’s post is based on a writing prompt I shared in a previous Daily Drafts & Dialogues post. Keep reading to see what I wrote, and to access more writing prompts.
What I wrote below is based on the following writing prompt: Set a timer for five minutes. Once you start the timer, start free writing about autumn. Write about whatever comes to your mind as soon as it comes to your mind, and don't overthink what you're writing about. Don't stop writing until the timer goes off. And feel free to repeat this writing exercise for any topic in the future, whenever you find yourself stuck.
I sense the nipping of the buds in more ways than one, in the nipping, crisper air of the muted autumn sun.
Where some feel colder, I feel crowded pews getting warmer. Searching for heat. For another Summer.
Where some see clouds, I see the glowing chalices of light and life. For growth. For another Spring.
Where some hear harvesting, I hear the reflective meditative chants for Winter. For peace. For another year.
Where some smell decaying earth, I smell the sweet spices of hope in the breeze that passes over and under all things like a tranquil spirit. For the future. For raked paths to make amends.
Where some taste looming death, I see the beginnings of a new lens for life, the proper mourning of past times, an occasion to be grateful for what was and what is yet to be. A time to be alive. To savor. To breathe deep.
Where the altar of repose is alive and well in the solitude of bustling winds in the night of Fall, in the fall of night, winding its way through the resting boughs, falling asleep. Falling into dreams.
Where the neutral hues of the day remind me that the sanctity of life is held in what we cannot yet see, in what may come or may never be. A tangible realm of potentialities. Of all that autumn leaves.
This draft ended up more poetic than I had originally envisioned, but I think I like how it turned out, as it seems to paint a literary/metaphysical/tangible scene with multiple layers. I might revise, edit, or add to it in the future. Stay tuned.
