Ice Melts
Today’s free write was inspired by what often surrounds us during the winter months, especially the winter months we’re living in right now: Ice and ICE.
The ice around their hearts, our hearts, will melt, along with the polar ice caps. If we let it or write it into being. Though one does not necessitate the other. In fact, the exact opposite is correct. Because as we write, we find what is ‘true blue’ within ourselves and others, what truly flows through our veins. As we all bleed the same colors, red, blue, and white. Lest we forget what that ideal is supposed to mean. Or the ways in which we are all uniquely different. Yet fundamentally, humanly, the same.
If we write it into being, by the words we do and do not say, by the habits we forge based on those words and their invisible counterparts, by the beliefs we wield like weapons based on those word-forged habits as if they weren’t only forging stories we tell ourselves and each other, about ourselves and each other, to forge the world we live in, together, and the future they’ll, we’ll, invent… the ICE we need to disappear will melt away, while the ice that sustains us stays intact, as they are not the same.
While one ICE is a social construct, meant to control and freeze free life as it is, as it should be, the other helps the planet construct life and its needed balanced harmony. But both exist in precarious situations based on the stories we forge and tell about them. As well as how we habitually consume and expel and tell those stories, to ourselves and others, dictating their natural yet not-so-natural evolutions into entire belief systems. That can prop us up or ensure our final fall, our final call, our imminent destruction. Which will you choose?
Ice melts with heat, scientifically. But we must remember to apply the appropriate heat from the appropriate source, as the sun also nourishes our moods, our livelihoods, our revolving planet. According to the stories we conjure, tell, and believe, both factual and lore. So we cannot scorch the entire earth to melt cold masked actors, lest we burn alive too, along with the ice sheets that are sustaining us, and disregard the lessons and travails of every other war forewarned.
I am angry, but I am going to try my human best to channel the fire of that rage into something that melts ICE away. From everywhere. For everyone. Who exists. Who breathes. Who have themselves and a family to feed. So they can exist and breathe. Without arbitrary arrested limbs and lives. But not the kind of ice that is life-sustaining. For that would destroy the entire planet and wipe out all of human civilization in the process, all the You’s and Me’s. That don’t hide or impede the essence of human nature.
Do you get my drift? How the words we write and wield can sustain life and ice, or extinguish it.
Here’s what I did when free writing today’s post:
I set a timer for ten minutes. Once I started the timer, I started free writing about ice. I wrote about whatever came to my mind as soon as it came to my mind without overthinking what I was writing about. And I didn’t stop writing until the timer went off.
If you started free writing about ice, what would you end up writing? (Feel free to share what you write in the comments or chat threads below if you do.)
