Starry Night
Today’s post is inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting, Starry Night. Keep reading to see what I wrote, and to access more writing prompts.
I have a small replica of Starry Night on my wall at home that I stare at often, and it inevitably inspired me to write something, as art often does. This particular painting is dark but also bright, beautiful, and deeply emotional, so it’s clearly perfect for a small dose of writing inspiration. Check out what I wrote below, then see what you can come up with.
Starry Night
The night is cool and clear, permitting me to see the silhouette of a sleeping village below. I mark the sun-moon on my canvas first. Next, I attempt to capture the collective rhythmic, steady breathing of the stars, wild and bright in the midnight sky hovering above the muted horizon in the distance. And I can almost sense them softly collide inside the twirling wind I represent, after commingling their colors and radiance.
I relish representing moments of solitude like this, as long as they don’t linger too long once everyone awakens at dawn. That’s when it becomes oppressively lonely, and I realize I am no longer among my painted portrayals of the night. When people and their engines and landscapes move too quickly to observe and capture, blurring into daily tedium and near-sight. And I must again remain outside the canvas without a brush. Too soon, the day inevitably arrives.
My hands are not my own as they form the large looming cypress. The last strokes now, before the crisp air of daybreak comes. And I wonder: Is it all real? Or a mere expression or impression of my mind? My hand doesn’t seem to want to register the difference. Yet it must be felt and perceived somewhere within the corners of my mind, the corners of this room, a window away from sight, in the middle of this fading starry night.
I might revise, edit, or add to this draft in the future. Stay tuned.
