The Vow
Today’s post includes a piece of flash fiction I drafted years ago, which is based on a writing prompt I haven’t shared here yet. Let me know how you would complete it in the comments.
Writing Prompt
Write about a vow that’s about to be broken by someone. Consider: What are they thinking and feeling? And why are they breaking their vow?
What I Wrote:
Standing on the edge of the cliff, staring at the blue-green water below, getting ready to jump, her final words ring in my ear.
Always live your life to the fullest, with no regrets. Promise me. Don’t wait to do the things that scare you. They’re usually worth it.
I understand the irony of jumping now, endangering my life to fulfill my vow to live my life fully. But the bungee cord is new and secure, I’ve been assured. And it’s now or never.
But I can’t do it. I can’t jump. And I don’t. The wind is too strong and all I hear is the pounding of my heart in my chest.
[Write what comes next in the comments, or share what you come up with for this prompt.]
Today’s Dialogue
Name one vow you’ve kept or one vow you’ve broken, and why.
