Will we ever stop worshipping billionaires?
Why do people worship billionaires? And why is worshipping billionaires problematic?
Every week a billionaire or two makes news headlines or is all over social media. But it’s not always for a good reason, or even an interesting reason, for that matter. For rationales that are hard to stomach, most people don’t seem too concerned with the details of how billionaires amass and spend most of their wealth, and how this impacts the entire world economically and socially. Instead, they are seemingly obsessed with billionaires' mega yachts, fancy cars, luxurious weddings and vacations, mansions, etc. Why? Is this because of our consumer-based capitalistic global culture? Our insistence (springing from collective denial) that a billionaire's wealth actually has nothing to do with us as individuals because of how 'special' they are?
Today, I'd like to pause and reflect on the world's collective (and ever-increasing and dangerous) obsession with billionaires, and why it's problematic.
