The word ‘writing’ is a verb when unaccompanied by an article (‘a’, ‘an’, ‘the’) and attributed to a pronoun or noun (‘She is writing.’, ‘Linda is writing.’ etc.) which means that it is a word of action and that it is something that someone does.
