5 Music Prompts
Write whatever comes to mind when you first read one of the song lyrics listed below, or listen to the song it’s from to gather inspiration. Whether the lyric sparks a scene with characters in it, a poem, a short story, a comic strip, a memory, a dialogue, a dream, a feeling, etc., try not to overthink it and just write.
“You’ve already robbed me blind
This is your payback, moneygrabber”
-MoneyGrabber by Fitz and the Tantrums
“I, I just woke up from a dream
Where you and I had to say goodbye
And I don’t know what it all means
But since I survived, I realized…”
-Die With a Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars
“So if I decide to waiver my
Chance to be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine
And hold my own and drive?”
-Drive by Incubus
“Straight up, what did you hope to learn about here?
If I was someone else, would this all just fall apart?
Strange, where were you when we started this gig?
I wish the real world would just stop hasslin’ me”
-Real World by Matchbox 20
“Honey, I know, I know, I know times are changin’
It’s time we all reach out for something new, that means you too
You say you want a leader, but you can’t seem to make up your mind
And I think you better close it and let me guide you to the purple rain”
-Purple Rain by Prince
3 Photo Prompts
Use one or all three of the photos below to kickstart your writing—it’s entirely up to you. Just write whatever comes to mind when you first look at the photo(s), whether it’s a scene, a dialogue, a memory, an essay, a poem, etc. Just see what it inspires you to write. And if nothing comes to mind when you first look at one of the photos, ask yourself questions about the photo that start with ‘what’, ‘who’, ‘why’, ‘when’, ‘where’, and ‘how’ (Ex. How did the main character get here? Why are they here? Who is with them? What does this photo remind me of? How does this make me feel? etc.).
Happy writing! Feel free to share whatever you end up writing based on any of the writing prompts above in a comment or chat thread. And don’t forget to subscribe to Daily Drafts & Dialogues to receive future writing prompts in your inbox.
