A Day for Reflecting on Our Dreams
What are you doing to keep your dreams alive today?
Today, of all days, I want to take a moment of silence to recognize all the dreams we’ve had that have come true, even if they didn’t come to pass precisely how we had imagined they would. Then I want to take another moment to envision how we can keep those dreams alive and well, how we can assist their natural evolutions.
Our dreams are not lost if we continue to keep them alive.
Now get ready to close your eyes for five minutes. Use a timer if you must. And while your eyes are closed, reflect on all those dreams you want to keep alive, and pick the one that stands out as the strongest, the most urgent. Do not open your eyes again until the five minutes have lapsed.
When you open your eyes again, write down your answers to the following questions: What did you see? What did you hear? What sparked your senses? What kind of world do your dreams exist in, and who is with you in that world? Who are you dreaming with or for? Then take a few more minutes to consider your answers if you want.
Next, complete the following sentence: “I have a dream...”
Keep writing until you run out of words to say.
Then, and this is the most critical part, share this dream you have with others. It can be a big dream or a little dream. That doesn’t matter. What matters is that your dream involves at least one other person and that you share it with someone else.
Cliche’ or not, this exercise is worth doing. We cannot forget the dreams we have for becoming the best versions of ourselves. Now is not the time for despair. Now is the time to remember our dreams, then work toward turning them into the world and reality we want to live in.
Even if you don’t finish the exercise included in the post above, please at least listen to a recording of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech today and let it inspire you. There’s a reason why it remains so powerful.
Now, more than ever, it’s important to hang on to our dreams and what’s worth standing up for and working toward, together.
