Daily Drafts & Dialogues is for those who believe in the power of storytelling.
Here’s more about what you can expect when you read Daily Drafts & Dialogues posts moving forward.
I have written a variety of posts for Daily Drafts & Dialogues across different platforms over the last several years. And during those years, I have actively tried not to define the publication itself because I’ve always wanted to leave enough room to explore different things with my writing, to essentially remain creative and curious rather than authoritative and domineering as both a writer and a human being.
I have always wanted the power of storytelling to drive what I read and write here and elsewhere, as storytelling is central to what it means to be human.
I never wanted Daily Drafts & Dialogues to become too niche-specific either, because I didn’t want my writing to become stale, predictable, or formulaic over time.
Instead, I want to offer my audience something useful and engaging, dare I say meaningful, that morphs into its own thing that tells its own story over time. (TBD on precisely what that will look like, as it’s all continuously evolving…though if you stick around, you could be a part of figuring that out.)
While I have avoided defining this publication too narrowly over the years, however, I can say what type of writing you’re most likely to encounter here.
In Daily Drafts & Dialogues you will encounter pieces of writing that encourage readers like you to explore thoughts and feelings about various relevant topics in healthy, productive, and creative ways— ways that embody or acknowledge the power of human-centered storytelling— writing that refuses to mindlessly or unintentionally become part of all the reactive, surface-level, distracting noise going on out there.
There’s far too much ‘authoritative’, data-driven, predictable, attention-grabbing, commoditized clickbait across saturated writing-adjacent niche markets on the internet these days. Content that is, to be frank, trite and boring and becoming nothing more than a dreary and exhausting nuisance to wade through to get to anything remotely interesting, useful, or human. Content that AI will hopefully take charge of soon enough, if it hasn’t already, so that we creative writers and storytellers can stay focused on more human-centered and authentically human-created stories.
There aren’t enough writers creating content that encourages their readers to slow down for a minute and explore their thoughts and feelings in healthy, productive, and creative ways nowadays—content that encourages meaningful storytelling in both fictional worlds and the real world, in other words. But the hope is that Daily Drafts & Dialogues will.
At my core, I am a human writer who asks a lot of questions, who seeks understanding and meaning and connection in everything from the mundane to the divine via storytelling. It’s a compulsion. I can’t help it, as storytelling is vital to being human and understanding one’s humanity within the world and all the people in it.
Writing and reading prolifically, daily, as well as engaging in meaningful dialogue about what I read and write daily, is how I choose to channel and hone these storytelling, uniquely human tendencies of mine. Read more about me on the About page, if you haven’t already.
Why am I saying all of this?
Well, I want you to know what you’re in for if you continue to read and subscribe to Daily Drafts & Dialogues posts moving forward, regardless of how it evolves over time.
If you’re interested in a publication that will encourage you to think critically and creatively about a variety of relevant topics related to writing and reading and the world we live in, as you tune into your underlying humanity and storytelling capabilities and tendencies, then Daily Drafts & Dialogues is for you.
If you’re interested in reading pieces of writing that will make you think or feel something, or that will encourage you to ask more questions about what you’re reading and writing or experiencing in everyday life, then Daily Drafts & Dialogues is for you.
If you’re looking for a more authoritative, cookie-cutter resource on writing and reading that is designed to tell you what to think and do every step of some generic writing journey that applies to anyone and everyone who wants to be a writer (which means that it will ultimately apply to no one who really wants to be an authentic writer), then this is not going to be your favorite publication. In fact, you probably won’t end up getting much out of it at all.
I could offer a bunch of cookie-cutter, surface-level, digestible pieces of writing advice in Daily Drafts & Dialogues. I have been writing professionally for nearly two decades of my life so far and do know a thing or two about a thing or two. And sometimes I will be more than happy to share what I know with you via posts that include tips and tricks to become a more productive and well-rounded writer and reader. But ultimately, those pieces of content alone will not be what helps you or me become the best and most authentic writers we can be.
The only things we can do to become the best and most authentic writers we can be are regularly reading and writing and engaging with one another about relevant topics that are interesting and creative, in interesting and creative ways that spur meaningful storytelling and dialogues— those things that spark a curious mindset, a growth mindset, a human-oriented mindset. Because it’s with those mindsets that our best ideas and writing and humanity will continue to surface and flow.
Some posts on Daily Drafts & Dialogues will be more creative than others, but you can always expect to encounter a variety of writing that will make you think, feel, or wonder (sometimes all at once). You’ll encounter everything from opinion pieces to thought-provoking pieces that pose important questions to poems, flash fiction, short essays, open letters, free writing exercises, book reviews (I’m bringing these back.), as well as pieces on literary trends, current affairs, pop culture, and more.
Please note that while the type of writing on Daily Drafts & Dialogues may vary to some extent, the impetus that generates it will remain the same: the human drive to seek understanding and meaning and connection in everything from the mundane to the divine via a storytelling lens.
If you’ve read this post up to this point, you probably appreciate and value the liberal arts, especially the humanities, as much as I do, which means Daily Drafts & Dialogues is right up your alley. And I couldn’t be more thrilled! Welcome. I hope you enjoy what you read here, and I look forward to engaging with you more.
