The holiday season of 2024 has officially arrived. ‘Tis the season for more shopping and running extra errands and attending special events and dinners and spending hours of additional time in the car or traveling. And just being busy and stressed. I get it. It can be a hectic time of year and isn’t typically the time of year most people try to start new habits—especially not a daily writing habit.
In fact, starting a new daily writing habit is probably the exact opposite of what most people think they should be doing right now, even generally well-disciplined writers who like writing most of the time.I mean, most people don’t even try to keep their typical habits during the holiday season, even if neglecting their typical habits leads to more stress. So why would it be a good idea to start a daily writing habit now?
Well, what if neglecting routines and good habits during the holiday season is what’s backwards? What if being more reactive or random and ‘busy’ is what makes things more stressful and less enjoyable during the holidays?
Honestly, I don’t want to stress anyone out. But what if sticking to your routines and priorities is what will keep you grounded and sane during the holidays? What if starting, or maintaining, your daily writing habit today, and not waiting until January first, is what will keep all your priorities in focus, regardless of how busy the rest of the world around you may seem? What if it will make you, oddly enough, enjoy the holidays more?
I’ll just go ahead and be blunt. I think that if you won’t do something this time of year, truly make it a habit, or truly make it a priority in your life, that you might not make it a long-term habit or priority come the first of January either. If writing isn’t important enough to do now, when will it be? When will you take it seriously enough to do it, no matter what? When will it be the consistent thing you do in your life that keeps you grounded and focused?
Even if all you do is write a couple hundred words every morning when you wake up while you’re drinking your first cup of coffee, you can make writing a daily habit today. You don't need to wait until January to start or maintain your daily writing habit. And you don't need to wait until Monday either.
