Writing Challenge: Omission Edition
Kickstart your writing with one or more of the prompts included in today’s post. Then share what you write in a comment or subscriber chat thread so we can discuss it or offer feedback. Have fun!
Today’s writing challenge is all about omission— what you don’t write.
Below are five writing prompts, and all of them require you to omit something from your writing. Pick one and get started, then share your writing experience with us in a comment or subscriber chat thread. Or complete all five for bragging rights, and for a chance to be featured in a future Daily Drafts & Dialogues post!
Prompt 1: Omit Articles
Write a piece of flash fiction about an animal or person that is at least 500 words and DOES NOT include articles (‘a’, ‘an’, or ‘the’) in it.
Prompt 2: Omit Dialogue Tags
Write a scene with dialogue in it that DOES NOT include dialogue tags (‘he said’, ‘she asked’, etc.).
Prompt 3: Omit Conjunctions
Write about a journey (real or imagined) that spans at least two continents or spaces that DOES NOT include conjunctions (‘and’, ‘or’, ‘but’, etc.).
Prompt 4: Omit Commas
Write at least one page about what happened yesterday that DOES NOT include commas.
Prompt 5: Omit Words Ending in ‘Y’
Write at least one page about something beautiful that DOES NOT include words that end with the letter ‘y’.
Do you accept today’s writing challenge?
Share what you come up with in a comment or subscriber chat thread so we can discuss it or offer feedback. And don’t forget to have fun!
